“I think we also saw this different sensibility about how to clear protests,” Straub said of the police response to campus demonstrations. In some cases, officers couldn’t distinguish lawful protesters from those who were being disruptive or causing violence, he added. The agreement mandated the NYPD to “change how it deploys officers to public demonstrations,” to better allow the public to exercise their First Amendment rights. NYPD officers in riot gear break into a building at Columbia University, where pro-Palestinian students were barricaded, on April 30. Officers were seen breaking down plywood barriers outside the entrenched encampment where protesters had barricaded themselves inside, as flash-bang explosives exploded overhead.

CNN —To file under the fantasy music collaborations category, Billy Joel has been toying with the idea of joining forces with some contemporary music greats. “I thought about putting together a band,” Joel retorted. “Me, Don Henley and Sting, and maybe John Mayer on guitar.”That roster would surely be a worthy update to the Wilburys, which was a supergroup team-up between the late Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and George Harrison, along with Jeff Lynne and Bob Dylan. Joel also said he talks to Paul McCartney “a lot,” but added that he doesn’t “have the nerve” to ask the former Beatle to band up. Joel humored Stern while he continued to fantasize about who would be in the supergroup, and said, “Ringo would be good.

CNN —Billy Joel has delighted his fans with news that he is about to release his first new single in 17 years. “It’s TIME TO TURN THE LIGHTS BACK ON,” he wrote on X, referencing the name of the song to be released on February 1. The clip describes “Turn the Lights Back On” as “the first new single in decades,” though that may be a slight stretch. Joel’s most recent single, “All My Life,” was released in 2007, which was his first new music since his album “River of Dreams” was released in 1993. On Wednesday, he will play a one-night concert in Tokyo before returning to Madison Square Garden on February 9.

JOHANNESBURG—Wealthy nations are sending tens of billions of dollars to poorer ones for clean energy, the linchpin of a global strategy to cut greenhouse-gas emissions in the developing world. But two of the most ambitious efforts yet—in South Africa and Indonesia—are now at risk of unraveling, sowing doubts about the rich world’s ability to push developing countries away from coal and other fossil fuels.

Maker of Wegovy, Ozempic showers money on U.S. obesity doctors

Novo spent at least $25.8 million over the past decade on U.S. medical professionals to promote its two obesity drugs, Wegovy and Saxenda, the analysis found. Jastreboff has also worked on clinical trials of obesity drugs for Eli Lilly, which markets a Wegovy competitor. Some doctors said Novo’s payments exemplify how the flood of industry money can dominate decision-making about care and coverage. Government pharmacy officer Solaru said her agency concluded that the new obesity drugs could be cost-effective by preventing other weight-related diseases and boosting workplace productivity. In January, the personnel office told its health plans they must cover at least one GLP-1 obesity drug for 8 million workers, retirees and family members.

The accident was one of the worst in years at a facility run by an international mining major, and the deadliest in South Africa in more than two decades. It highlights the dangers involved in mining in the country, the largest producer of platinum globally and a major gold producer. Hundreds of thousands of workers still toil underground here in some of the world’s oldest and deepest shafts.

“We do not prohibit people in this industry from having personal bank accounts with us,” she added. One of the risks associated with sex work is money laundering and human trafficking, where victims, mostly women, are forced or coerced to engage in commercial sex acts. Many banks and other financial platforms avoid doing business with these industries altogether. “That is the problem we have — trying to recognize potential human trafficking that we would have to report.”Beyond banks, many financial services apps have blanket bans, which state they won’t process any transactions related to adult content or services. CashApp — which, like Square, is owned by Block — lists “selling adult content and services” on its “not allowed” list.

Last week, as Israel continued its military response to the October 7 Hamas terror attack, its political goals — and potential endgame — remained a source of huge controversy. Join us on Twitter and Facebook“Take, for example, the Israel Defense Forces strike on Gaza’s Jabalya refugee camp on Tuesday. “Following the horrific massacre in Israel by Hamas terrorists on October 7, I felt an intense, relentless grief. Though Perry wanted to escape Chandler, he kept him around, because heaven forbid anyone saw what he was hiding.”

CNN —For the past year and a half, medical cannabis company CEO Gary Long has spent a lot of his time reassuring Georgia’s small-town mayors about what will soon be coming to their local pharmacy: medical marijuana. The Georgia Board of Pharmacy is currently processing applications from pharmacies around the state that want to sell low-dose THC products. National chains such as CVS and Walmart won’t be selling THC products in Georgia, but Long said 130 local pharmacies have already agreed to sell his product exclusively. Making medical cannabis so accessible in such a traditionally conservative Deep South state like Georgia caught some by surprise. Californians have been able to buy medical cannabis since 1996 and adults there got the right to use it recreationally in 2016.

JPMorgan is still pointing fingers at the US Virgin Islands, saying the funds will be used to shore up its law enforcement. AdvertisementAdvertisementJPMorgan Chase has agreed to pay $75 million to settle a civil lawsuit from the US Virgin Islands over claims that it facilitated Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking operation. The funds come on top of the $290 million JPMorgan Chase has already agreed to settle a separate class-action lawsuit brought by Epstein victims, to fund a compensation program. Epstein owned two islands in the US Virgin Islands, which were sold by his estate earlier this year to billionaire Stephen Deckoff for $60 million.

Attorneys for former JPMorgan executive Jes Staley revealed the fee total in a filing late Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. On Thursday, his lawyers filed a new version of the document that redacted the reference to the bank's legal fees. JP Morgan spokeswoman Patricia Wexler declined to comment on the bank's purported legal costs from the suit. JPMorgan was sued last year by "Doe" in a would-be class action case on behalf of herself and other young women who were trafficked by the late money manager Epstein. The bank separately was sued by the government of the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Epstein had maintained a residence on a private island, where he sexually abused women.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. In the US, prosecutors are given enormous power to apply the law as they see fit, choosing who to charge and what to charge them with. Evidence of their misdeeds can secure convictions and allow for strict sentences that otherwise couldn’t be imposed. Bill Bramhall/Tribune Content AgencyThe 97-page indictment unveiled by Willis last week cites a lot more evidence than could be arrayed against a sandwich served at lunch. “We are the chief law enforcement officers in each jurisdiction, with the weighty power to deprive others of their freedom,” Aronberg observed.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon told CNBC on Wednesday that lawsuits against the giant bank related to its former client, the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, have impacted its brand equity "a little bit." I wish we hadn't," Dimon told CNBC's Leslie Picker. The Virgin Islands accuses JPMorgan of retaining Epstein as a client despite multiple red flags being raised internally about him over the years. "We would never have continued to do business with him if we believed he was engaged in an ongoing sex trafficking operation," Wexler said. Epstein, 66, killed himself in a Manhattan federal jail in August 2019, a month after he was arrested on child sex trafficking charges.
